Adding a dual fuel inverter generator that can run on both gasoline and propane/LPG to your setup is the next level up in survival. Even if you already own a standard gasoline generator, the duel fuel generator offers significant advantages in versatility, safety and convenience.
Infinite Shelf Life: Regular gasoline generally remains usable for 3 to 6 months when stored in a fuel tank under normal conditions. As it oxidizes it can gum up carburetor jets. Propane, on the other hand, can store in a propane tank for years and it will still work instantly.
Inverter Technology (Safe for Sensitive Electronics):
Older, traditional generators produce “dirty” electricity with high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). This can fry the microprocessors in modern electronics. Inverter generators produce clean, stable electricity—identical to the power coming out of your wall outlets. Why it matters: You can safely plug in laptops, smartphones, modern TVs, medical devices (like CPAP machines), and smart home hubs without needing an expensive online UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).
Fuel Efficiency and Lower Noise:
Smart Throttle / Eco-Mode: Inverter generators automatically adjust their engine speed to match the electrical load. If you are only running a few lights, the engine drops to an idle, saving massive amounts of fuel compared to a traditional generator that screams at 3,600 RPM constantly. Because of the enclosed casing and variable RPM, a 5kW inverter generator is typically much quieter (often around 60 – 65 decibels from a distance, like a normal conversation) than a contractor style generator, making it neighbor friendly during extended outages.
Easy Availability in Emergencies: During widespread power outages or natural disasters, gas stations often lose power (meaning pumps don’t work) or run out of fuel. Propane tanks (like the ones for BBQ grills) are widely available at hardware stores, gas stations and grocery stores. I have a solar generator, gasoline generator and this duel fuel shown here. The army and previous professions taught me the importance of being prepared.
