What Is WallyDocking?

"WallyDocking": Combination of "Walmart" & "docking," aka "boondocking." RVing term for staying overnight free in Walmarts parking lot.

Here is everything you need to know about WallyDocking

1. Is it actually allowed? It depends, but the general rule is “maybe.” Historically, Sam Walton welcomed RVers to park overnight, and many locations still do. However, corporate policy leaves the decision up to individual store managers. Additionally, local city ordinances, county laws, and HOA regulations often ban overnight parking in commercial lots, regardless of what the store manager wants. Retired veterans, (watch your 6) in California.

2. The Golden Rules of WallyDocking: If you plan to WallyDock, you must follow strict etiquette to ensure stores continue to allow RVers. Always ask the store manager (usually at the customer service desk) for permission to park overnight and ask where in the lot they prefer you to park. WallyDocking is meant for one night (a place to sleep and rest before moving on), not a multi-day camping trip.

No “Campsite” Setup: Do not put out slide-outs (unless necessary), do not put out awnings and never set up lawn chairs, tables or outdoor grills. You are parking a vehicle, not camping. You must use your RV’s onboard bathroom and kitchen. You cannot dump grey or black water in the parking lot.

Park Far Away: Park on the outer edges of the lot, away from the main entrance, where customer traffic is heaviest. Take up only as many spaces as necessary. Support the Store: It’s good karma (and good for the continuation of the privilege) to go inside and buy your groceries, supplies or fuel at that Walmart. Leave No Trace: Pack out all your trash. Never leave litter behind.

3. How to Find WallyFriendly Walmarts: Because policies change frequently, you should never assume a Walmart allows overnight parking. Many stores have signs explicitly stating “No Overnight RV Parking.” Call Ahead: When in doubt, call the store directly and ask to speak to a manager.

Summary: WallyDocking is a fantastic, cost-effective convenience for road tripping, retired veteran RVers on the move but it is a privilege, not a right. Always respect store policies and local laws so the tradition stays alive. Comments or Questions, Contact Me.
