Boneyard Vista RV Park
(formerly Davis-Monthan AFB FamCamp)
If you take a map of Tucson, Arizona and trace your finger to the southeastern edge, you’ll find a landscape where the desert meets the sky in a blaze of copper and gold. Nestled against the rugged backdrop of the Rincon Mountains, you’ll find a hidden oasis known officially as Boneyard Vista RV Park. Seasoned travelers and retired military veterans still fondly call it by its former name: the Davis-Monthan AFB FamCamp.
Boneyard Vista Is Part Resort, Part-Time Capsule And Part Aviation Lover’s Fever Dream
For the uninitiated, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is world famous as the home of the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, better known as “The Boneyard.” This is where hundreds of retired military aircraft, from lumbering cargo planes to sleek fighter jets, go to rest under the arid Arizona sun, their white, anti-radiation cocoons glowing in the desert light.
Boneyard Vista sits just a stone’s throw away from this monumental history. While you aren’t parked directly among the grounded giants, the spirit of aviation permeates the air. It’s not uncommon to sit outside your rig with a morning cup of coffee, only to watch an A-10 Thunderbolt II (the legendary “Warthog,” a staple of the base) roar overhead on a training flight, slicing through the azure sky.
The Ultimate Snowbird Sanctuary
Originally operated exclusively as a military FamCamp for active duty, retirees, and eligible Department of Defense ID cardholders, this park is legendary on the RV circuit. For “snowbirds” escaping the bitter winters of the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, Boneyard Vista is the holy grail. The park offers spacious, well maintained sites with full hookups (30/50 amp service), glorious desert landscaping, and a sense of community that is hard to replicate. But the real amenity here is the weather. While the rest of the country is shoveling snow, Tucson boasts winter days in the 70s with brilliant sunshine, followed by crisp, star studded desert nights that beg for a fire pit and a warm blanket.
Beyond the Gate: Tucson at Your Doorstep
While the park itself offers a peaceful, gated sanctuary with all the necessary amenities, laundry facilities, clubhouses and friendly camp hosts, its location is the real launchpad for adventure. You’re minutes away from Saguaro National Park East, where giant saguaro cacti stand like ancient sentinels across the desert floor. Hiking and mountain biking trails wind through the foothills of the Santa Catalina and Rincon mountains.
For the Foodie: Tucson is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. A short drive into town brings you to the “Best 21 Miles of Mexican Food,” where you can sample authentic Sonoran hot dogs, handmade tortillas, and world class regional cuisine. The nearby Pima Air & Space Museum, one of the largest non-government funded aviation museums in the world and tours of the actual Boneyard offer days of exploration.
A Community of Shared Stories
Perhaps the best part of Boneyard Vista RV Park isn’t the geography at all; it’s the people. Because of its military lineage, the park is a melting pot of shared experiences. Gathered around the picnic tables or walking their dogs at sunset are retired colonels, enlisted veterans, civil servants, and modern adventurers. Conversations spark easily, stories are swapped from decades of service and strangers quickly become caravan buddies.
The Verdict
Whether you’re a military veteran looking for a welcoming community, an aviation buff wanting to be close to the action, or simply an RVer seeking a warm winter haven, Boneyard Vista (the old Davis-Monthan FamCamp) is more than just a place to park your wheels. It’s a front-row seat to the desert sky, a nod to our nation’s aviation history, and a home away from home in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Just remember to book early.
