Dispersed Camping - Boondocking Near Fort Huachuca - Arizona
Are you looking for information about remote camping? If so, here’s some general information to help get you started.
1. On-Post Camping / RV Parks
Canyon Vista RV Park: Located on Fort Huachuca, this is typically the main option for recreational vehicle and tent camping for authorized personnel (military, DoD civilians, retirees and sponsored guests). It offers full hookups, restrooms, and laundry facilities.
Note: You should contact Fort Huachuca’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) for current eligibility, reservations and rates.
2. Off-Post / Remote Camping (Boondocking) Near Fort Huachuca
If you are looking for dispersed (remote) camping in the surrounding area, Fort Huachuca is nestled against the Huachuca Mountains and surrounded by public lands. Just west and south of the installation, the national forest offers great opportunities for dispersed camping, especially along forest service roads (such as Miller Canyon, Carr Canyon, or Ramsey Canyon areas, though rules vary by specific road and elevation). There are vast stretches of BLM land surrounding the Sierra Vista/Huachuca City area where free, primitive dispersed camping is generally allowed for up to 14 days.
Tips for Remote Camping Here:
Weather & Terrain: Mountain roads can be steep, narrow, and rough. Check vehicle clearance before heading up canyons like Carr Canyon. Temperatures in the valley get very hot in the summer, while mountain elevations can be surprisingly cool at night. Always check fire restrictions, as Southeast Arizona frequently experiences high wildfire danger. Pack out all trash and respect wildlife (black bears, mountain lions, and javelinas live in the area).
