Apache Flats RV Resort (AKA: Apache Flats Campground) The hidden gem of the military morale, welfare and recreation (MWR) campground system.
Located on Fort Huachuca in sunny southeastern Arizona, The MWR campground systems offer a peaceful, scenic, and well maintained desert getaway. Retired veterans, here’s a breakdown of what it’s like to stay there.
1. Setting and Scenery
The Desert & Mountain Backdrop: The campground sits at the base of the stunning Huachuca Mountains, offering dramatic views, especially during sunrise and sunset (known for brilliant pinks and oranges).
Wildlife: Because it’s right up against the base of the mountains, it’s common to see local wildlife. You might spot Coues deer, javelinas, wild turkeys, coatimundis, and a wide variety of birds. (Keep your distance and secure your food/trash!)
Climate: Fort Huachuca is at an elevation of about 4,600 feet, which makes its climate a bit milder than low-desert areas like Phoenix or Tucson. Winters are crisp and cool (often freezing at night, but pleasant during the day), springs and autumns are gorgeous and summers can get hot during the day (90s+), though evenings cool down nicely. It is also directly affected by the North American Monsoon season (July – August), which brings dramatic afternoon thunderstorms and vital rain.
2. Facilities and Accommodations
Apache Flats is modern, clean, and specifically designed to accommodate everything from massive Class A motorhomes to tent campers.
RV Sites: They offer full hookup sites (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electricity). Many sites are pull-throughs, and they are generally spacious with gravel pads and picnic tables.
Cabins and Yurts: If you aren’t traveling in an RV, the resort offers rental cabins and yurts that are clean, comfortable and budget friendly.
Bathhouse & Laundry: The central bathhouse is typically praised by guests for being very clean, modern, and climate controlled, featuring hot showers and coin operated laundry facilities.
Wi-Fi and Cell Service: Wi-Fi is generally available (though like most RV parks, it can slow down when the park is full). Cell service (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) is typically strong on the fort.
3. Amenities on Site
Community Clubhouse: A great gathering place for social events, games or just relaxing out of the sun.
Outdoor Spaces: There are barbecue areas, fire rings, walking paths that retired veterans enjoy.
Pet Friendly: The park is very friendly to pets, with plenty of walking areas (just watch out for cacti, thorns and local wildlife).
4. Fort Huachuca & Local Area
Because the campground is on a secure military installation, guests have access to base amenities and the surrounding area offers plenty to do:
Base Amenities: You are close to the commissary, the exchange (PX), the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre, and the Fort Huachuca Museum (which has fantastic exhibits on the Buffalo Soldiers and the Apache Wars).
Bisbee: Just about 25 minutes away is the historic, quirky copper mining town of Bisbee, built into the canyon walls. It’s famous for its artsy vibe, ghost tours and mine tours.
Tombstone: About 30 minutes away is “The Town Too Tough to Die,” where you can visit the O.K. Corral and walk the historic wooden boardwalks.
Sierra Vista: The city immediately outside the gate has all standard modern conveniences, grocery stores (Walmart, Safeway), Home Depot, restaurants, and medical facilities.
Birding & Nature: The region is a world-renowned destination for bird watchers, particularly nearby Ramsey Canyon and Madera Canyon, where people travel from all over the globe to see rare hummingbirds.
5. Vibe and Atmosphere
Quiet and Relaxing for retired veterans: It’s generally a very quiet, low key park populated largely by retired military snowbirds in the winter and traveling families or contractors in the summer.
Dark Skies: Because of local light ordinances to protect astronomy research in the region, the night skies at Apache Flats are incredible for stargazing.
Summary
If you are eligible to use military MWR facilities (Active Duty, Retirees, 100% DAV, DoD civilians with access, etc.), Apache Flats is a fantastic stop. It combines the peace of the Arizona desert with modern comforts, proximity to fascinating history and very reasonable nightly rates.
