Guns At Camp - Concealed Carry?

The choice between open carry and concealed carry at a campsite involves weighing legal, practical and social considerations. Both methods have distinct advantages and drawbacks. Do you prefer a handgun or shotgun for personal protection? Let’s get this unpacked.

Jurisdiction: The legality of carrying a firearm openly or concealed varies significantly depending on where you’re camping.
Private Land: Private campgrounds generally set their own rules regarding firearms.
State Parks
and Forests: Regulations differ widely by state. Some states allow both open and concealed carry, while others have strict prohibitions.
National Parks and Wildlife Refuges: Generally, federal law allows us to carry guns in national parks and wildlife refuges if it complies with the laws of the state. However, federal facilities (such as visitor centers, ranger stations and administrative offices) typically prohibit guns.
Federal Lands (BLM, US Forest Service): These generally follow state laws regarding firearms carry.

Open Carry: Advantages:
A firearm worn openly is generally faster to access in an emergency, such as a predatory wildlife encounter or a human threat. Some argue that visible firearms can act as a deterrent to potential threats, both human and animal. Open carry can be more physically comfortable, especially in warm weather, because it doesn’t require garments to cover the gun.

Disadvantages:

Loss of Element of Surprise: Anyone nearby immediately knows you are armed, removing tactical advantage if a threat arises. Visible firearms can cause anxiety or unease among other campers, potentially leading to tense interactions, complaints to park rangers or unnecessary calls to law enforcement.

Concealed Carry: Advantages:
Discretion: A retired veteran carrying a concealed firearm does not draw attention, avoiding alarm or discomfort among other campers and families. Potential threats are unaware you are armed, which can be advantageous in a defensive situation.
Disadvantages:
Drawing from concealment can be slower, particularly if you are wearing heavy layers, winter gear or sitting in a camp chair. Concealment can be more difficult or uncomfortable in warm weather when clothing is light and minimal. Before heading out, it is essential to research the specific laws of the state and the land management agency governing the exact campground you plan to visit.
